The four artistic directors of our theatres commended the fact that Belarus had become dominated by native drama as it came to comprise 25% of all playlists – an amount never before thought possible.
We, the Belarusian authors, living and dead (for in this ghetto, contemporary authors were grouped together with the classics), “rejoiced” in this moment!
This 25 percent notwithstanding, the existence of our vocation in Belarus is still threatened. Being a playwright is not considered an official occupation, and we receive neither wages nor pensions. Under Stalin, even farmers were entitled to more social benefits than Belarusian authors in the 21st century. The “Belarusian Dramatists Guild” that we tried to initiate many times to protect our rights was not authorized.
