When I work on a production that is based on one of my texts, I am neither playwright nor director. Of course, I have the structure of the play in my head when I’ve written it, but, for me, a theatre text is not finished until the day it premieres: I end up rewriting many of the scenes, cutting various passages and even adding new sequences very late in the process. There have even been times when I’ve continued to change the text long after the premiere. I love the fact that I, as an author, have the freedom to intervene and rework the play. I think that playwrights should have an active role in the development of their plays and not be isolated from the stage.
For me, the most interesting thing about a theatre text (whether it is mine or by one of my colleagues) is the tension it creates between reality and fiction, as well as the various perspectives of reality (and realities) that it offers.
