I am often asked why I do not write political satire. This question is not only asked of me, but of all the other authors in my country as well.
Ever since ancient times, presenting satirical caricatures of the representatives of one’s political system on stage has been particularly popular. In his comedies, Aristophanes caricatured and ridiculed the war-crazed politicians of his time and subject the deficiencies of Athenian democracy to biting criticism.
Would it be possible for today’s satirical pens – gifted as though they may be – to top the magniloquently composed texts and explanations that our politicians create on their own as they parade around in television appearances day in and day out? Do they really need someone to make a caricature of them? These are tough times for authors. Really tough times. Or aren’t they?
