Under the motto “the director is responsible for everything,” he is viewed as superior to the drama, which “is merely the reason for a production,” and above the art of performance, because “actors are merely clay waiting to be molded by a talented sculptor.”I believe that this standpoint is wrong. We have all seen where it can lead when someone is deemed superior to someone else.We already have classes of people that rank higher than others, nations that are more important than others… Any psychologist would say that a superiority complex emerges when someone actually has an inferioritycomplex. In my opinion, a production‘s success is not marked by whether it is able to conquerthe drama and the performers, but rather, whether it is able to form an alliance with them. Whether they are able to work together and coexist, with no one “above”or “below” the other.
