when I became a part of the author milieu. I was thrilled by its free spirit, its heresy, its opposition to the regime. The Latvian Authors Association was a strong force in the seventies and eighties, it played a leading role in shaping public opinion. The authors took liberties that no one else could afford to take. And that is how authors came to be primarily associated with the perpetuation of the idea of freedom. Writing was an alternative medium that society used to communicate with. This explains the immense amount of book publications that emerged, as well as the overcrowded theatres and halls during poetry readings. People would wait in line for days to get a hold of tickets.
