I know your stereotypes, because I have them, too.

When you write prose, you can ignore your readers. But ignoring the audience in a theatre would be unimaginable; you can only manipulate them. That is why the style of my plays is made up of the following components: me, plus the Lithuanian theatrical tradition, plus my Lithuanian audience. Theatre shapes the audience, and then that same audience shapes me. That is where I come in and attempt to influence both. Thus, the contemporary author creates his art in the heads of his contemporary readers (audience members). “I know that you know that I know,” says the author to his readers. I know your stereotypes, because I have them, too. Once this mutual awareness has been established, it is easy to communicate the feeling “I am you.”
