On December 4, 2009, “The General of the Dead Army” was presented in Belgrade. This play is based on a novel by Ismail Kadare and was staged by the Bosnian-Albanian director Dino Mustafic. Before that, I had adapted it for the Albanian Theatre in Skopje, where it premiered in September 2009. The Belgrade performance was an extraordinary step towards easing the tension in Albanian- Serbian relations after the war and the resulting conflicts. Under Mustafic‘s direction, the time that the novel was set in was slightly displaced so as to create a connection to the latest Balkan wars. It confronted Serbian society as well as the region‘s other cultural communities with a challenge: facing up to recent history.
