A short report from the Swedish stages

There is a strong wave of feminism on the stages , represented by both male and female feminists.

Staging gender has for several years been the most discussed topic in the theatre in Sweden and the most popular theme, I would say, in new work. A discussion both about gender per se and the representation of gender on stage.  In the big cities, that is.

Research is being done and has been done in both theatreschools and academic institutions.  An awareness has arisen. Among all theatreworkers, I would say.

There is a strong wave of feminism on the stages , represented by both male and female feminists.

Playwrights seem to be more and more involved in other kinds of writing, rather than strict playwriting. We see all forms of applied theatre, community theatre and all kinds of research/workshop based work, post-post-modern theatre and collaborations in theatre communitys.

A young playwright’s critical and funny play about the decline of one of the biggest institutions within the Swedish welfare system was moved from a small venue to the biggest space and still sold out. So politics seems to be coming back to Swedish stages.
