Info: Born in Piatra Neamt in 1977, Gianina Carbunariu initially studied Romanian and French literature in Bucharest until 2000 before devoting herself to directing and playwriting and ultimately earning her doctorate in the latter in 2009. Having made her playwriting debut in 2000, she has worked as a director since 2002. She achieved an international breakthrough with her play “Stop the Tempo,” which premiered in Bucharest in 2004 under her own direction. It was performed at the Theatre-Biennale that same year. In 2006, her play “mady-baby.edu” (2004) was presented in another of her own productions. This play (which revolves around three young Romanians who go to Ireland as a result of the lack of perspectives in their home country but fail to achieve anything there) has been performed in Germany and many other countries under the title “Kebab.” She staged her second most recent theatre text, “Fastforwardrewind,” in Bucharest in 2008. And in May 2010, the Münchner Kammerspiele theatre presented her play, “Sold Out,” which deals with the selling of Romanian citizens with German and Jewish ancestry by the communist regime. For many years, she has conducted workshops and projects for school children and marginalized groups.
